Understanding the cause of mare subfertility involves careful investigation of the mare’s breeding history coupled with thorough diagnostic investigation of the reproductive tract. Accurate diagnosis is the first step towards successful treatment.
Mare subfertility examinations typically include:
- Perianal conformation assessment
- Evaluation of the cervix
- Ultrasound examination of the reproductive tract
- Video hysteroscopy (endoscopic examination of the uterus)
- Uterine biopsy and other uterine sampling techniques.
Following this examination and coupled with the results of diagnostic tests, our reproductive veterinarians will make patient specific therapeutic or corrective surgery recommendations and give an estimation on the prognosis for breeding.
Further interventions may include; hysteroscopic endometrial cyst ablation, hysteroscopic ablation of uterine adhesions, cervical repairs, laparoscopic treatment of oviductal blockage, correction of anatomical defects of the external genitalia and laparoscopic uterine imbrication (uteropexy).
