Our equine surgical unit is led by registered specialists and highly experienced equine surgeons trained to world best standards. Qualified nursing staff and veterinarians support the surgeons as part of a co-ordinated team. We have Surgeons, Anaesthetists, Medicine Specialists, and Interns on duty and ready to accept cases day or night.
Our operating theatre and anaesthesia recovery area allow us to perform all routine surgical procedures including colic surgery, caesarean sections, correction of limb deviations in foals, fracture repair, arthroscopy, tie-back procedure, cryptorchid castration, and reproductive surgery.
We completed the development of a state-of-art surgical facility in early 2023. This enables us to now offer a dedicated 24/7 surgical service. It includes a dedicated standing surgery, colic surgery and orthopaedic surgery. There are three recovery rooms, one being specifically designed for rope recovery from anaesthesia. We have dedicated surgery stables to accommodate our cases, providing geographic divide between horses undergoing elective procedures and those hospitalised for illness. This ensures effective biosecurity between these horses.
We have 3 dedicated Specialist Surgeons based at AEH – Dr Angus Adkins, Dr Duncan Pearce & Consultant, Dr Jim Vasey. Together, our surgeons have a combined surgical experience of 75 years.
Our surgery team is supported by 3 dedicated anaesthetists, all with advanced training in anaesthesia and interns who assist. The Medicine department, staffed with 2 Specialists in Equine Medicine assist with the pre and post-operative management of cases.
Our relationship with Scone Equine Hospital also means we have the opportunity to draw on the additional resources of a team of equine surgery & medicine specialists who are supported by veterinary anaesthetists, interns and qualified nursing staff.
